This “Ordinary Day” is Not Ordinary

Days have a way of fooling us.

Most of them look so unassuming and normal when they arrive, so very ordinary that we don’t care for them properly. We take them lightly. We squander them. We short change them. We fritter them away, believing that they are uneventful, that they are of little consequence, that they are disposable.

We spend these seemingly ordinary days believing that life is somewhere behind or ahead of us, in the things we’ve done or will one day do.

This day may seem quite ordinary to you, but it is anything but that. History is being made today.

Today someone is being born.
Someone is skinning their knee on the playground.
Someone is meeting their first love.
Someone is getting a grave diagnosis.
Someone is discovering their gift.
Someone is watching their marriage crumble.

Someone is taking their first steps.
Someone is bursting with pride at the sight of it.
Someone is rearing back their head and exploding with laughter.
Someone is learning how to walk again.
Someone is coming back home.

Someone is grieving deeply.
Someone is finding Jesus.
Someone is losing faith.

Someone is regretting words they cannot take back.
Someone is signing the lease.
Someone is saying goodbye to a dream.
Someone is hurting someone they love.
Someone is eating emotionally.
Someone is freezing.
Someone is finding their voice.
Someone is fighting for life.
Someone is finding out they’re going to be parents.
Someone is hanging by a thread.
Someone is being interviewed for their dream job.
Some one is hitting rock bottom.
Someone is veering into the oncoming lane.

Someone is discovering their sexuality.
Someone is being fired.
Someone is going to propose.

Someone is dying surrounded by tearful loved ones.
Someone is dying alone.
Someone is contemplating leaving.
Someone is smiling at a stranger and making them want to stay.
Someone is unaware that this day will be their last.

And you are surrounded by these someones.

And so this day is anything but ordinary, friend. It is singularly, spectacularly beautiful and you are here within in. You will have 86,400 precious seconds in which to laugh and fight and dream and dance and give—and to do whatever it is that you would do with them.

This day may not feel all that noteworthy, but don’t believe for an instant that it isn’t momentous because it is. It will never happen again in the history of the planet, so be reverent and be present and feel the full gravity of it all. Be aware that the place your feet are on is holy ground.

Today is fiercely extraordinary.

Live it as extraordinarily as you are able.
