Colin Kaepernick Was Right About Us

Colin Kaepernick was right about us, white America.

He was right to kneel because when he did, he fully exposed us.

He exposed us as we became viscerally disgusted, not by the reckless disregard of black lives, but by the earnest and open declaration of black grief at their premature passing.

He exposed us when we felt it was our right to tell another human being how to express their personal freedoms, during an anthem supposedly devoted to celebrating those personal freedoms.

He exposed us when we treasured flags and songs over flesh and blood; when we repeatedly ignored dissenting facts in order to hold on to our easy and lazy outrage.

He exposed us when we chose to listen to the words of a divisive white President over athletes of color, as to their motives and intentions.

He exposed us as we had the stratospheric nerve to lecture him about the right way for him to protest as a citizen of this country.

He exposed us when we chastised him for the manner in which he expressed his freedom, because it was a little too “free” for us.

He exposed us as we saw all of these things, and still remained silent.

And he’s exposing us now, those of us who are  burning shoes and cutting up socks and boycotting Nike—because a strong man of color who will not be shamed into silence or allow us to make the rules, still makes our blood boil—which is the most telling and tragic truth of all.

Privilege is a terrible disease, because it is invisible to those most fully afflicted with it. When most deeply in the throes of the heart sickness, they cannot see themselves, or the reality of the moment. They do not require data to be disgusted or truth to craft the narrative of their suffering.

They simply feel fear, even when it is unfounded; oppression, even when there is none; offensive, even when they have no cause.

If you’re seething right now, this is a symptom.

If you’re still doubling down on some imagined defense of “America” while simultaneously seeking to deny people of color America’s most elemental liberties—you’re proving Colin Kaepernick right.

If you’re still refusing to believe the player’s voices over the one in your head or in a President’s tweets or in an angry country singer’s rants—you’re showing why Kaepernick was correct to protest from the very beginning.

You’re confirming the very reason his knee first hit the turf two-year ago: because too many white people want to go through life undisturbed by any reality of their advantages.

They will do anything not to be inconvenienced by the ugly realities of a system that they are the greatest beneficiaries of.

They will be profoundly pissed off when a person of color intrudes on their entertainment with a dose of sobering truth about life and death.

They will follow the most convoluted, nonsensical thought lines, if this allows them to quiet marginalized people and to evade culpability for their own prejudices toward those marginalized people.

It isn’t surprising that the folks so violently shaken by Colin Kaepernick, profess to defend a freedom they don’t like him exercising.

They’re the same ones saying that they love both America—and a draft-dodging, Russian-beholden, POW-belittling President.

They’re the same people who say they want to rewind and reclaim America’s “greatness”, while ignoring how much suffering and injustice that supposed greatness created for so many.

They’re the same people who claim allegiance to both Jesus and to Donald Trump.

Cognitive dissonance doesn’t register when you’re white and terrified of losing your dominance.

By kneeling, Colin Kaepernick let us do the work for him.

He didn’t need to belabor the point, he just let us show ourselves.

He allowed white America’s responses to reveal who we are.

He saw something ugly in us that we didn’t and still don’t want to see.

And he was right.

  1. Mr. Pavlovitz
You are so fundamentally wrong in your assessment of Colin Kaepernick’s actions, and the false narrative that he is propagating.
The very premise, that blacks are unfairly targeted, based upon their skin colour, and a supposed “privilege” is enjoyed by some is inherently prejudiced, and bigoted.
Federal crime statistics do not support this narrative, and in fact show rates of police shooting victims are comparable among all ethnic groups in the US.
Police shoot more whites than any other group, as would be expected in a country predominantly white.
This false narrative is extremely divisive, and detrimental to the social cohesion of our country, yet you have the nerve to accuse President Trump’s policies as “divisive”
Kaepernick’s rhetoric is harmful, and is based not in fact, but in a desire to advance the left’s political agenda irrespective of reality.

  2. Thank you for recognizing that most white middle Americans could care less about the mistreatment and disenfranchisement of the Black communities in America. Sadly, hate is so prevelant in this country that we’ve normalized it and just look the other way. It is time for change. I applaud Kaepernick for taking a stand us.

  3. This is by far the most absurd and insulting thing I have read in a long time. You intentionally ignore or try to debunk the fact that people in this country are actually patriotic, its an insult for you to think or perpetuate the narrative that White people are racists and that is why we are disgusted with Kaepernick… Which is untrue for the VAST majority of people that have a problem with the way he decided to excerise his right to protest. The problem is with his platform or punch line that he used for his message.. Not his message. I just see what is happening today with people kneeling for the anthem, burning and desecrating flags under the guise of Racial injustice, with out any statistical data or specific examples to be found to support the idea that America as a country is Racist…. Its craziness. I personally feel like the Athem shouldn’t be sang prior to sporting events in America….. The public obviously isn’t capable of the respect it deserves anymore, that is shameful. It is unpopular to be loyal to your own country anymore… The flag and the anthem should be bigger than anyone persons feelings or agenda. Kaepernick did one thing…. He pushed the line on what is fair game for political agendas. The next guy will go after something more shocking to get a reaction. Kaepernick is not some modern day hero for the repressed he was sitting on the bench during the anthem for 2 weeks before he was finally asked about it.. Then he started kneeling. Some players in the 2016 season said they were kneeling to protest Trump!! That just goes to show you that he set a presedence that the Athem is now fair game for protest…. Thanks for helping to erode our National Identity.. I’m really afraid for our children. They won’t ever say the pledge of allegiance at school, Will have no respect for the flag and now they are being shown that you don’t have to respect the President of the United States. That our democratic electoral process doesn’t matter. The liberal media is actively (this article is a prime example) are brain washing people to believe that thier feelings are the most important thing on earth. America is America because a group of people believed thier personal well being, fears and life was not more important then what they stood , fought and died for. Just imagine a America where the British and American Loyalists won the Revolutionary war. What if the voices of the Loyalists had drowned out the Partriots? So I ask you one thing…. Where will tomorrows Patriots come from?

  4. It is a mixed relationship. If the whites did not buy African slaves to pick cotton, there would be no African American today? They were a primitive culture that never would have set sail for the New World? They have a “gangsta” side now that shoot it out with law enforcement and celebrate it in their songs. NWA sings “F**k the police”. Taking a knee was no solution to gang violence and police shooting. He should have paid poor black people to protest. That would have been helping unemployment. He got millions of dollars to help his people. But his job was to play football, not protest on the field. Now he is black balled and unemployed.

  5. I’m not a football fan, but I play one when the Super Bowl is on tv! I caught glimpses of Super Bowl LIII, and it was a snoozer! We can blame Trump for that disaster of a Half-Time performance as well! Why? Because he interjected himself into the situation, and made it about disrespecting the flag and America, when it was actually about POLICE BRUTALITY… The wrongful killing of black and brown people!!! Because he co-opted the Kneeling Protest
as a diversion from his nefarious deeds, the NFL, and his Lemmings followed suit, and took Don The Con’s bait!!! If people would stop and THINK, they would realize that in fact, one humbles oneself more, and shows greater respect, by lowering oneself to a kneeling position!!! Players who “Take a knee” are basically saying… I respect you VERY MUCH America, but I humbly ask you to acknowledge and address the problem of POLICE BRUTALITY in this country!

  7. You are so full of shit you are stinking up the USA. It is always we poor blacks and you privledged whites. LOOK AT THE FACT’S. There are more White’s killed by cops you black people go around killing than blacks killed by them and that is a FACT. I am tired of the MSM lead racial bullshit spreading throughout this country. WE ALL pretty much have mixed race families so give it a damn rest now. The only race we should be ridding in this country is Muslim they are the biggest threat and have been for centuries. WAKEUP Moron!

  8. This guy is so stunningly wrong that it is sad. CK was right to take a knee. He took advantage of a massive platform to spotlight a serious…no, “problem” is not the correct word here. Failure of our system of hiring an training law enforcement. My dear beloved Catholic Church did the same thing with young seminarians. CK did it on his own. He was no puppet of the liberal hate mongers.

  9. Funny how you are spewing all this “stuff that needs to be said” and monetizing it. You picked a good business model at the right time to make money off weak minded people, good job there dude!

  10. Mr Pavlovitz, thank you for your contribution to address the disease of racism/white supremacy.
The talents of people like yourself are greatly needed in the struggle, for the survival of the planet and all its inhabitants.
    The disease is that deadly!

  11. Colin decided his own fate, he, opted out of his contract with the Niners thinking (or not) that another team would be willing to pay more for his services, but his skills had diminished to the point that nobody in their right mind would have this MALCONTENT on their team. His decision, his outcome, his bed to sleep in😊🇺🇸✝️

  12. NFL
    Negros Forever Losing
February 3rd 2019, the struggle suffered many casualties. 3 Days into Black History Month, the black people took a knee in the struggle. And once again prove, divided we fall. Instead of showing a united front, against the NFL’s blatant attack on an African Americans silent peaceful protest. We tuned in to watch the NFL, as if all is well. And squander yet another opportunity to tell the world that Black Lives do Matter. As I said if you watched the Super Bowl. Malcolm’s no hero of yours, you wouldn’t have marched with Martin, Rosa didn’t sit for you and Trayvon Martin was just a hashtag.
In the same way that the (POS) president of stupidity and his armies of ignorance. Shine the Light on racism in this country and exposed many of your neighbors, for who they really are. Our lack of Unity, on small things as simple as turning off the TV for 4 hours. Is why our enemies consider us a joke. And they scoff at Black History Month. If we can’t unite for a day, we don’t deserve a month honoring people who made sacrifices that we would never make. All that being said, if you post Black History Month stuff and Super Bowl stuff you’re know friend of the struggle and the major reason n***** forever losing… and if I see any of this foolishness on my timeline it will be dealt with swiftly
    Signed Roderick

  13. Thank you! This is a great article. You know how I know? Just look at how people are uncomfortably squirming around about it. Just reading their angry comments is very entertaining, proving your point once again. You hit the nail on the head. Blessings to you and your family.
