In Praise of "Invisible Pastors"

As a Pastor, I spent yesterday, as I do many Sundays, at church for 13 hours. I spend these days delivering messages, playing music and running big events or worship gatherings.

They are physically and emotionally draining days for sure, but they also come with some amazing blessings, in the form of expressions of gratitude from many good people, who want to show their appreciation and love for the work you do. There are waves of hugs, and handshakes and hoorays…

However, for my wife Jen, it was also a full day of work. (even though Sunday should be her day-off from her equally draining and important Monday-to-Friday job). While I was at church, surrounded by hundreds of people, and receiving many praises and thanks, she was home with our kids, caring for them and for our home; without a break, without rest, and most of all, without any pats on the back or kind words to encourage her.

This is the story of all spouses of pastors, ministers and church volunteers. They do what they do every week, so that others, many of whom they will never meet, can be blessed.

So today, if you’ve been encouraged by any church, pastor, minister or ministry, I encourage you to reach out to the spouses of those who serve you, and thank them for being silent but equal partners in the work that changes lives.

And to all spouses of those who are in ministry of any capacity, thank you for being true unseen pastors; without a stage or accolades, but not without profound influence and impact in countless lives.

Thank you to my wife, and all those who encourage the encouragers. You are loved and appreciated!
