Loving the Sinner, Hating the Sin (of Still Supporting This President)

Dear Trump Supporter,

For years you’ve been telling me that you don’t actually hate LGBTQ people; that in fact you quite love them—you just despise their “immoral lifestyle choices.” You’ve tried to make the case, that for you to be silent and to allow them to remain willfully in their sin would be the most unloving thing you could do.

Despite me letting you know how hurtful your words and how damaging your methods have been to LGBTQ people (and to their families and to outsiders watching from a distance), you insisted that you weren’t doing anything less than loving them as Jesus would. You said that you could separate people’s worth from what you believed to be their abominable actions—that you could affirm one and condemn the other.

I always thought that you were full of it when you said you “loved the sinner and hated the sin”—but now I think I understand.

In fact, I now think I need to return the favor, and to help you the way you claim to be helping others. I need to (as you are prone to saying) “speak the truth to you in love”:

Your support of this President is sinful.

It is amen-ing behavior antithetical to the Gospel, counter to the message of Christ, and destructive to the Church—and I fear you are damning your own soul in these days.

No one is born with political affiliations, and so this hateful lifestyle is a choice.

Your decision to perpetuate this man’s continual immorality is an act of spiritual treason, of open rebellion against the Jesus of the Gospels. I know you always claim to live by the Bible, and how readily you pull out isolated verses to make your case against people you take issue with, and to justify your hurtful stance—so I figured you’d appreciate this kindness:

You shall not commit adultery. (Exodus 20:14)
The President is on his third wife, and has openly confessed to affairs and bragged about having physical encounters outside of marriage. Fidelity is not his thing.

You cannot serve both God and money. (Matthew 6:24)
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. (1 Timothy 6:10)
The President is the epitome of the money-loving man. He is clear and unrepentant in his idolatry of the Almighty dollar—it is his sole object of worship (outside of self.)

You are to love those who were foreigners. Deut. 10:19
Through travel bans and wall building and the demonizing of Muslims and Mexican immigrants, the President has shown nothing but hostility to outsiders.

Love your enemies and bless those who curse you. Matthew 5:44
The President’s Tweets, rallies, and speeches to Boy Scouts are littered with vile words about political opponents, public servants who defy him, and anyone not effusive with praise.

Whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me. Matthew 31:45
The least of these referred to the vulnerable and ignored; the sick, the incarcerated, the poor. This President is legislating contempt against such the least of these almost daily.

You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. Exodus 20:16
The President is nearly incapable of speaking truth; uttering whichever words are advantageous, and creating reality in real-time. He has no interest in veracity.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9
Taunting other world leaders on social media regarding the use of nuclear weapons and threatening with military force, is actively opposing peace.

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Ephesians 4:29
Do you really even want to go there?

I’m sorry to clobber you with these verses, but the Bible is clear on these matters, and your support of this President represents a clear disobedience to God’s Word. The longer you remain in this rebellious lifestyle, the more you condemn yourself. It’s very difficult to say these words to you, but as a brother in Christ, I wouldn’t want to be guilty of condoning your transgressions.

Since you have a lot of experience as a sinner-lover and sin-hater, I know you won’t be offended at any of these truths, and that you’ll take this advice in the spirit of helpfulness and Christian love in which it is given—that you’ll actually be grateful that I was honest with you in an effort to put you back on a Godly path. That’s what love does, it says hard words—doesn’t it?

The simple truth friend, is that you can’t be a Christian and support this President simultaneously so you’re going to have to make a choice. That’s just how it is.

I love you, but I hate your sin of supporting this President. I know you’ll understand.
